Aseptic Operations Laboratory
The objectives of the Aseptic Operations Laboratory, a new capability at Kennedy Space Center, are to facilitate biological research that requires an aseptic environment to enable the assembly of spaceflight hardware under aseptic conditions, and to provide training and assist in the performance of aseptic operations. The laboratory employs methods to protect against contamination by microorganisms.

  • Training and assistance in the performance and assistance in the performance of aseptic operations

  • Class 10,000 Positive Pressure Transfer Room (15×10 ft) equipped with germicidal ultraviolet lamps
  • Autoclave
  • Class II Type A/B3 Biological Safety Cabinet
  • Laminar fl ow shelves
  • Four 8-ft3 growth chamber incubators for plant seedling and bacterial culture applications
  • Two 6.5-ft3 CO2 incubators for cell and tissue culture applications
  • Controlled-temperature water bath and forcedair shaker incubators for cell culture and media preparation applications
  • Orbital platform shakers
  • Two dissection microscopes and stand-alone illuminators
